Topics in Computational Group Theory: Primitive permutation groups and matrix group normalisers
نویسنده
چکیده
Part I of this thesis presents methods for finding the primitive permutation groups of degree d, where 2500 ≤ d < 4096, using the O’Nan–Scott Theorem and Aschbacher’s theorem. Tables of the groups G are given for each O’Nan– Scott class. For the non-affine groups, additional information is given: the degree d of G, the shape of a stabiliser in G of the primitive action, the shape of the normaliser N in Sd of G and the rank of N . Part II presents a new algorithm NormaliserGL for computing the normaliser in GLn(q) of a group G ≤ GLn(q). The algorithm is implemented in the computational algebra system Magma and employs Aschbacher’s theorem to break the problem into several cases. The attached CD contains the code for the algorithm as well as several test cases which demonstrate the improvement over Magma’s existing algorithm.

Conjugacy of Subgroups of the General Linear Group
In this paper we present a new, practical algorithm for solving the subgroup conjugacy problem in the general linear group. Mathematics Subject Classification: 20-04, 20H30. 1 Introductory Material This paper presents a new algorithm to solve a subcase of the following: Problem. Given two groups G,H ≤ K, determine whether there exists a k ∈ K such that G = H. If so, return one such k. This prob...
متن کاملMathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach Report No . 37 / 2007
The theory of permutation groups is essentially the theory of symmetry for mathematical and physical systems, and therefore has major impact in diverse areas of mathematics. Recent significant advances in permutation groups have contributed to, and benefited from, many areas, leading to a more powerful permutation group theory including astonishingly complete classifications and asymptotic resu...
متن کاملThe Primitive Distance-Transitive Representations of the Fischer Groups
Research partly funded by the DFG (Germany) in the framework of the joint research project \Algorithmic Number Theory and Algebra", and also by the European Community HCM grant in \Computational Group Theory". We classify the primitive distance-transitive representations of the Fischer sporadic simple groups and their automorphism groups. It turns out that the only primitive distance-transitive...
متن کاملThe primitive permutation groups of degree less than 2500
In this paper we use the O’Nan–Scott Theorem and Aschbacher’s theorem to classify the primitive permutation groups of degree less than 2500. MSC: 20B15, 20B10 1 Historical Background The classification of the primitive permutation groups of low degree is one of the oldest problems in group theory. The earliest significant progress was made by Jordan, who in 1871 counted the primitive permutatio...
متن کاملA Framework for Parallel Disk-Based Computation for Very Large Groups
For the first time in computational group theory, parallel disk-based search algorithms are used. These algorithms emphasize streaming access while avoiding the high latency of disk. Search and enumeration is a recurring theme throughout computational group theory. Examples include orbit computation, permutation group membership (permutation group order, random element of a permutation group,et...
